Description

Without knowing anything about the man whose life is recounted on these pages, The Iron Man of China may seem a curious title. Except for a year furlough home in the states, Father Lavin served the Chinese people for twenty years (1932-1953), traversing thousands of miles by foot or bicycle, and exposing himself every day to life threatening dangers. In 1953 the Communists expelled him from the mainland threatening him with death if he should ever return. This well-documented book, written by the Iron Man s nephew, illustrates one of the reasons why there are ten million Catholics, loyal to Rome, in China today.

This book is a testament to an individual who really was a pioneer not and just religion but in life. Father Lavin made inroads into China- which very few dared to do. It was a dangerous time, it was a precarious time, and with a population that was either confused or fearful of him. The book details how old he and his group took care of so many orphaned children. Father Lavin personally took care of so many orphan children – he arranged education, shelter, clothing, and a sense of belonging. His dedication to these children in the 1930’s and 40’s has had indelible effects. How do I know?My father was one of those orphans. Father Lavin took care of him and not only gave them a proper support – even pay for my father’s technical college degree. It is truly astounding. That technical degree got my father a visa in the 1960s to the United States because of the need for his type of skillset. My father worked hard, and contributed greatly to this country – we are truly grateful to Father Lavin because he really did make it happen for our family. I am here today because of him. And that is a true testament to the dedication of Father Lavin. Our father speaks so fondly of his boyhood. Had it not been for Father Lavin- we wouldn’t be here. The book richly details Father Lavin’s accomplishments- and it also serves as a guide for all of us to live by. - The Family of Joseph Chu.
