First off, I don't count the kid buddy throwing knives into a board as training, so this is not a kung fu movie in my book. This is, however, one of my favorite Shaw Brothers movies.I can rarely say that you will go wrong with Ti Lung and David Chiang in the same movie.I must admit that some of my great enjoyment for this movie comes from first watching it on Black Belt Theater back-in-the-day. I have never been able to see this one on the big screen, but I bet it would be glorious. I would only hope to be able to watch it with hooting and hollering crowd of kung fu movie fans because that is how you really get into one of these movies.Chang Cheh isn't as extravagant with the camera work as he is on some his films. Ti Lung looks really young (or is that just because I watched Legend of the Drunken Master w/Jackie Chan last week?) It's great looking for all those guys you know from other martial arts films in the background. This movie has huge knife and axe fight scenes. There very little unarmed combat. There is a bit of romance in the movie, but nothing that will convince your girlfriend or wife that this is a date movie. Now the Larry Benski edited Duel of the Iron Fist amazingly enough had little or no blood. Watching this version it is had to image how the film could be edited to have little or no blood in it.I've watched it enough times to know what is going on in the plot. If you are familiar Shaw Brothers movies, you can kind of guess what is going to go on based on some of the actors. The fight scenes are huge. It seems like hundreds of thugs/minions die in this movie.David Chiang's character "the Rover" has his own little soundtrack rift. The only thing that I can really dislike about this movie is the Rover's "want-to-be girlfriend"s wig.
